- սպայապետ (spayapet) — from Middle Persian
Etymology
[edit]The word was borrowed many times from Iranian, from its different dialects and over different periods. According to Pʿerixanyan, the most common spelling, սպարապետ (sparapet), is from Parthian; compare Parthian 𐭎𐭐𐭀𐭃𐭐𐭕𐭉 (spʾdpty), Parthian 𐫙𐫘𐫛𐫀𐫅 (ʿspʾd /ispāδ/). The less common form սպայապետ (spayapet) was borrowed later from Middle Persian, or, perhaps formed in Armenian from սպայ (spay) and պետ (pet). The spelling ասպարապետ (asparapet) is from early Middle Median *aspāδapat(i); the spelling ասպահապետ (aspahapet) is from later Middle Median *aspāhapet. All originate from Proto-Iranian *spādapati- (“commander of the army”), composed of *cwáHdaH (“army”), whence սպայ (spay), and *pati- (“lord”), whence պետ (pet). Compare also Middle Persian 𐭮𐭯𐭠𐭧𐭯𐭲𐭩 (spāhpet).
