Etymology

The origin is unknown. Compare Arabic سَاحَ (sāḥa, “to tour, travel, roam; to flow, stream”).

1. (intransitive) to flow, be flowing, run out, pass over, roll or glide on; to roam, wander

   սահել ի մտաց ― sahel i mtacʻ ― to slip from, escape the memory

   սահեալ անցանել ― saheal ancʻanel ― to run; to elapse, to glide away

   • 5th century, Bible, Wisdom of Solomon 5.10:

     Եւ իբրեւ զնաւ սահեալ ՚ի ջուրց կուտակելոց. զորոյ իբրեւ անցանիցէ՝ ո՛չ գոյ զհետսն գտանել․ եւ ո՛չ զշաւիղս գնացից նորա ՚ի մէջ ալեաց։

     Ew ibrew znaw saheal ’i ǰurcʻ kutakelocʻ. zoroy ibrew ancʻanicʻē, óčʻ goy zhetsn gtanel; ew óčʻ zšawiłs gnacʻicʻ nora ’i mēǰ aleacʻ.

     And as a ship that passeth over the waves of the water, which when it is gone by, the trace thereof cannot be found, neither the pathway of the keel in the waves.

2. (intransitive, post-Classical) to slip, slide, glide

   սահել ի վերայ սառի ― sahel i veray saṙi ― to skate

   սահեցաւ ― sahecʻaw ― he slipped, his foot or feet slipped
