[edit]Etymology
[edit]The origin is uncertain.
Probably connected with Ancient Greek ὄσπριον (ósprion, “pulse, legume”).[1][2][3]
Mkrtčʿyan sees a rare alternative form սպ- (sp-) in the hapaxes Old Armenian սպ-օք (sp-ōkʻ, “a kind of cereal or legume”, instrumental plural?)[4][5] and Middle Armenian սպն-ա-խայտ (spn-a-xayt, “(of a horse) speckled with lentil-shaped dots?”)[6] and connects (ո)սպ(ն) ((o)sp(n)) with Akkadian 𒋛𒂊𒁍 (se-e-pu /sēpu/, “a kind of cereal used to make bread”), both supposedly borrowed from an unknown substrate language.[7][8]
