[edit]Etymology
[edit]The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan proposes connection with Sanskrit पीवन् (pīvan), पीवरी (pīvarī, “fat, swelling”), Ancient Greek πίων (píōn), πίειρα (píeira, “fat, fertile, rich”), reconstructing Proto-Indo-European *peyH-ur-ih₂ for Armenian. A connection with գեր (ger) is also possible.
