Etymology

[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan proposes connection with Sanskrit पीवन् (pīvan), पीवरी (pīvarī, fat, swelling), Ancient Greek πίων (píōn), πίειρα (píeira, fat, fertile, rich), reconstructing Proto-Indo-European *peyH-ur-ih₂ for Armenian. A connection with գեր (ger) is also possible.
