Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Middle Armenian ճուտ (čut), whose origin is unknown. Perhaps somehow connected with Old Armenian ճետ (čet, descendants, progeny), which in the dialects also means "chick". Alternatively, an onomatopoeic formation. According to Ačaṙean, the similarity to Laz ჭუტა (ç̌uťa, small) is accidental.
