Borrowed from an Iranian word of the form *hu-nazand. For the constituents compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hsu- and Persian نژند (nežand, nažand, “timid, weak, infirm; sad, cast down”), Sogdian [script needed] (nznt /⁠nizand⁠/, “humble”).
