Borrowed from Middle Iranian *havvān, from Iranian *ham-vā̆na-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *van- (to like, to desire, to love); compare Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬥𐬙𐬁 (vantā, beloved one, wife) and Sanskrit वनित (vanita, a loved wife).
