Borrowed from an Iranian compound, the first part of which is identical with համ- (ham-), հան- (han-). Bailey identifies the second part with Khotanese [script needed] (pāysa-, front, side), Ossetian фӕз (fæz, surface), Sogdian [Term?] (/⁠pʾzy⁠/, piece), continuing Proto-Indo-European *peh₂ǵ-.
