Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hmwc-, hmwz- /hāmmōz-/, to teach, learn), the present stem of [Book Pahlavi needed] (hmwhtn' /hāmmōxtan/), whence Persian آموختن (âmuxtan). The sense development is "to teach" → "to admonish" → "to persuade". First etymologized by Dervischjan. See also համոզակեր (hamozaker).
