Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *gʷih₃wo- (pitch) and cognate with Old Irish (pitch), Proto-Slavic *živica. Ultimately from either Proto-Indo-European *gʷeyh₃- (to live), because pitch is the plant’s ‘living material’, or *gyewh₁- (to chew), whence English chew, Russian жевать (ževatʹ).
