Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *kh₂ewl- and cognate with Ancient Greek κήλη (kḗlē, tumour; rupture, hernia), Proto-Germanic *haulaz (breach, crack; rupture, hernia), Proto-Slavic *kỳla (outgrowth, hernia). Alternatively, related to Russian шуло́ (šuló, testicle).
