Etymology

A dialectal word, unattested in Old or Middle Armenian. Of unknown origin. Related to Azerbaijani xıncalaus, خنقیلیش (xınqılış), هنقیلیش (hınqılış, Ornithogalum), and Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܚܸܢܓ̰ܵܠܵܘܣܵܐ (ḥinjālāwsā, mandrake).

Usage notes

Ten species of Ornithogalum are known in the territory of modern Republic of Armenia,[10] where it can be found in all marzes. It is used as food and in medicine as an analgesic.[11][12]
