խաշխաշ

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Middle Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Persian خشخاش (xašxâš).

Tʻargmanutʻiwn dełocʻ has խաղպապ տուառուպ (xaġpap tuaṙup) (var. խաղպապտո ռուպ (xaġpapto ṙup)) as a translation of Arabic أَفْيُون (ʔafyūn), from which Ališan understands the otherwise unknown խաղպապ (xaġpap) and տոռուպ (toṙup) as synonyms of խաշխաշ (xašxaš). However, the gloss is probably a distortion of խաշխաշ (xašxaš) + ըռուպ (əṙup), ռուպ (ṙup, thickened juice).
