Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. The basic meaning is “border, hem (especially a round one)”. The senses “privy parts; prepuce” are a back-formation from թլփատեմ (tʻlpʻatem, “to cut the foreskin round about, to circumcise”) by post-classical authors.
