Old Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]The origin is uncertain.
The derivations from Proto-Indo-European *tek- (“to weave”) or *(s)tegʰ- (“to stitch”) are usually rejected because Armenian -զ- (-z-) requires *-ǵʰ-. Petersson connects with թիզ (tʻiz, “span”) and reconstructs a Proto-Indo-European *teǵʰ- (“to stretch”) for both, remarking, however, that there are no cognates in other languages, apart from, perhaps, Russian таза́ть (tazátʹ, “to scold, rebuke”).
