Etymology

[edit]

According to Périkhanian, a tabooistic transformation of earlier *երազգ (*erazg), borrowed from Parthian *razg, from Proto-Indo-European *(H)resg- (to waive, to plait). The word is also attested as երազգայից (erazgayicʻ), ablative case of *երազգայք (*erazgaykʻ), a nominative plural formed from *երազգայ (*erazgay), the old genitive/dative of *երազգ (*erazg). The old instrumental *երազգաւ (*erazgaw) is attested in the toponym Երազգաւորս (Erazgawors).
