Etymology

From Parthian ghrʾy-, ghrʾʾy (*gahrāy-), which is usually glossed as “to boast, exult, be proud” but is revised to “to cry loudly” by Perixanjan, who derives the word from Proto-Iranian *gāθram rāy-; compare Avestan 𐬔𐬁𐬚𐬭𐬋.𐬭𐬀𐬫𐬀𐬥𐬙 (gāθrō.rayant, giving out a cry).
