From Proto-Indo-European *bʰerno-, grown from *bʰer- (to bear, carry); cognates include Ancient Greek φερνή (phernḗ, dowry), φόρτος (phórtos, burden), Albanian barrë, Sanskrit भर (bhára, burden), Persian بار (bâr, burden), German Bürde.[1][2]
