Etymology

[edit]

A Classical Syriac name, attested in Armenian sources as Նունա (Nuna) (a bishop of Göksun), Նոյնաս (Noynas) (a bishop of Seleucia), Նունոս (Nunos) (a bishop of Antioch). Cognate with the Hebrew name נון (Nūn, Nōn), Akkadian name 𒄩 (Nūnā). All from the Semitic word for "fish": Classical Syriac ܢܘܢܐ (nūnā, fish), Akkadian 𒄩 (nūnum, fish).

The feminine form of the Syriac name is the origin of Նունէ (Nunē).
