Etymology

[edit]

From Ancient Greek Θοργομά (Thorgomá), from Biblical Hebrew תּוֹגַרְמָה (tōḡarmā). The correct nominative is Թորգոմա (Tʻorgoma); the spelling Թորգոմ (Tʻorgom) was mistakenly back-formed from the genitive Թորգոմայ (Tʻorgomay). The Biblical “House of Togarmah” probably referred to the Proto-Armenian kingdom centered around Melitene. By identifying Togarmah with the ancestor of Armenians Moses of Chorene was either following biblical commentators or he knew a local tradition.
