Զաւէն

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Old Armenian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

According to Ačaṙyan, an Iranian borrowing. Compare Persian زو (zav), زاب (zâb). These are connected to Avestan 𐬎𐬰𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀 (uzauua) by Justi. According to Ačaṙyan and Hübschmann, the ending -էն (-ēn) is the Middle Iranian diminutive suffix -ēn, from Old Iranian -aina-, found also in such Iranian borrowings as Սուրէն (Surēn), Արտէն (Artēn), Գուրգէն (Gurgēn), Վազգէն (Vazgēn), Արտաշէն (Artašēn).
