Etymology

From Proto-Permic *roć, borrowed from a Finnic language, ultimately from Proto-Finnic *roocci (Swede). Compare Finnish ruotsi (Swede) and Estonian rootsi (Swedish). Cognates include Eastern Mari руш (ruš) and Erzya руз (ruz).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian роч (roć) and Komi-Yazva руч (ruć).
