[edit]Unknown, the word exists exclusively within the Bulgar language family and not in any other Turkic language. Fedotov and Yegorov suggest a very early borrowing from Persian سیمرغ (simorğ), however they do not address where the final -т (-t) comes from.[1][2] Attested in Danube Bulgar as ΩΜΟΡΤΑΓ, the diminutive of ΩΜΟΡΤ (omurt ~ omort, "eagle").[3]
