Inherited from Proto-Turkic *sïrtlan (hyena); cognate with Uzbek sirtlon, Uyghur سىرتلان (sirtlan), Turkmen syrtlan, Turkish sırtlan (hyena); Kyrgyz сырттан (sırttan, a mythical, fierce and vigilant dog).
