Etymology
[edit]Via an intermediary language, from Proto-Turkic *kudug (“water well”), from Proto-Turkic *kud- (“to pour”).
Compare with Old Uyghur [script needed] (quduğ, “water well”); Kazakh құдық (qūdyq), Kyrgyz кудук (kuduk), Uzbek quduq, Uyghur قۇدۇق (quduq), Shor қудуғ, Tuvan кудук (kuduk), Yakut кудук (kuduk).
The intermediary could have been a Mongolic language (compare Mongolian худаг (xudag, “well”)).
