Etymology

From earlier *quyun (whirlwind), probably from a Mongolic source, from Proto-Mongolic *kuï (whirlwind), compare Mongolian хуй (xuj, whirlwind).

Cognate with Tatar коен (qoyen), Kazakh құйын (qūiyn), Kyrgyz куюн (kuyun), Southern Altai куюн (kuyun), Uzbek quyun, Uyghur قۇيۇن (quyun), Khakas хуюн (xuyun, whirlwind).
