Possibly from Hungarian gomba (mushroom) +‎ -овец (-ovec). Cognate with Slovak gombovec and Ukrainian ґомбовець (gombovecʹ), ґомбовці (gombovci), and perhaps also Serbo-Croatian гомбоцgomboc.
