From Early yem, from Proto-Turkic *yē-. Cognate with Kumyk ем (yem), Kyrgyz жем (jem, fodder), Kazakh жем (jem, fodder; bait), Bashkir ем (yem, fodder; bait), Azerbaijani yem, Turkish yem (fodder; bait); Tuvan чем (çem, food; fodder), etc.
