From Proto-Turkic *yāyïn (catfish, sheat-fish; salmon).

Cognate with Tatar җәен (cäyen, catfish), Kazakh жайын (jaiyn, catfish), Nogai яйын (yayın, catfish), Kumyk яйын (yayın, catfish), Kyrgyz жайын (jayın, catfish), Bashkir йәйен (yəyen, catfish), Chuvash ҫуйӑн (śujăn, catfish).
