From Proto-Samic *jotētēk, from earlier *juta-, borrowed from Proto-Baltic, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *Hyéwdʰh₁eti (to move forward). Cognates include Northern Sami johtit, Finnish judata and Lithuanian judėti.
