Inherited from Old East Slavic ꙗвити (javiti), from Proto-Slavic *aviti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ew- (to perceive, see, be aware of).

Cognate with Proto-Germanic *awiz (obvious) and Sanskrit आविस् (āvís, manifestly, evidently).
