Etymology

[edit]

A connection with Latvian jùmts (roof), jùmt (to thatch) is one possibility. This etymology conflicts with the doctrine that *jaN became * in Proto-Slavic.

ESSJa reconstructs *jutiti sę instead, allegedly from Proto-Indo-European *yewH- (to blend, mix) with a t-extension.
