Etymology

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic щедръ (štedrŭ), from Proto-Slavic *ščedrъ. The expected form would be *щёдрый (*ščódryj), compare Belarusian шчо́дры (ščódry). Cognate to Polish szczodry and Ancient Greek σκεδάννῡμι (skedánnūmi, I split or scatter).
