Etymology

From *šuŋqar (falco), probably from a Mongolic source, compare Mongolian шонхор (šonxor, falco).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (šuŋqar, Falco gyrfalco); Tatar шоңкар (şoñkar, falcon), Kazakh сұңқар (sūñqar, falcon), Kyrgyz шумкар (şumkar, Falco rusticolus), Uzbek shunqor (Falco rusticolus).
