[edit]From *šuŋqar (“falco”), probably from a Mongolic source, compare Mongolian шонхор (šonxor, “falco”).
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (šuŋqar, “Falco gyrfalco”); Tatar шоңкар (şoñkar, “falcon”), Kazakh сұңқар (sūñqar, “falcon”), Kyrgyz шумкар (şumkar, “Falco rusticolus”), Uzbek shunqor (“Falco rusticolus”).
