Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic шьствие (šĭstvie), from Proto-Slavic *šьstvьje. Constructed from the root of Proto-Slavic *šьdlъ (resultative participle, later past tense, of *jьti (to go)) + *-ьstvo + *-ьje (compare Russian идти́ (idtí), -ство (-stvo), -ие (-ije)).
