[edit]From Ottoman Turkish شاگرد (şâgird), from Persian شاگرد (šâgerd, “pupil”), from older *Middle Persian ašākert, the later attested form of which is 𐭠𐭱𐭠𐭢𐭥𐭲 (ašāgart).
