Etymology

Borrowed from Tatar [Term?] (to endure), ultimately from Middle Mongol ᠴᠢᠳᠠᠬᠤ (čidaqu, to be able to, to be capable) (cf. Mongolian чадах (čadax)).[1][2][3]

  1. (intransitive) to endure, resist, withstand
    пӑр çынна чӑтатьpăr çynna čăt̬atʹthe ice can withstand a person
  2. (intransitive) to be held back
    вăл кулмасӑр чӑтса лараймарӗvăl k̬ulmas̬ăr čătsa larajmarĕhe could not hold himself from laughing
