Etymology

From *čïnï-ayaq (cup; bowl), a composition of Persian چینی (čini, porcelain) + Proto-Turkic *ańak (vessel, cup).

Cognate with Tatar чынаяк (çınayak, cup), Bashkir сынаяҡ (sınayaq), Kazakh шыныаяқ (şynyaäq, cup), Khakas сыны аях (sını ayax, porcelain cup), Uzbek chinoyoq (porcelain cup), Turkmen çanak (bowl; cup), Azerbaijani çanaq (bowl).
