From Proto-Samic *čuvδē, from Proto-Finno-Permic *suwďa.

Related to Hungarian ujj (finger) and Eastern Khanty ёй (joj). Cognates include Ter Sami чуввтӭ (čuvvt’e), Skolt Sami čuʹvdd and Northern Sami čuvdi.
