[edit]Inherited from Proto-Slavic *čečetъ. Cognate with Ukrainian че́чіт (čéčit), Slovene čečèt. Per Vasmer, of onomatopoeic origin and further related to Lithuanian kekùtis (“type of siskin”), kikìlis (“linnet”), kė́kštas (“jay”).
