[edit]чернить (černitʹ, “to blacken”) + -ло (-lo). Inherited from Old East Slavic чьрнило (čĭrnilo). Akin to Old Church Slavonic чрънило (črŭnilo). Compare Ancient Greek μελάνιον (melánion), Latin ātrāmentum. Also compare бели́ла (belíla).
