From Proto-Samic *čëkčë, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *sükśe. Cognates include Finnish syksy and Finnish syys, Hungarian ősz, Northern Sami čakča and Skolt Sami čõhčč, Moksha сёксе (śokśe) and Udmurt сизьыл (śiźyl).
