Etymology

ци́фра (cífra) +‎ -ово́й (-ovój)

Originally referred to statistics, such as for example in "Цифровой материал для изучения переселений в Сибирь" (Digital material for studying resettlement in Siberia), a publication from 1896.

More recent senses associated with electronics and especially computers are assumed to be a semantic loan from English digital.
