Etymology

[edit]

In spite of the formal difficulties, Anikin considers Proto-Slavic origin and further associates with Lithuanian kỹbras, skiẽbras (thin, slender) (with s-mobile). Presumably from Proto-Slavic *cibrъ with rare case of second palatalization before Balto-Slavic *-ei-. Alternatively, from *cěbrъ (< earleir *káibras) with irregular shift *-ě- > *-i-.
