Inherited from Old Ruthenian церко́вный (cerkóvnyj), from Old East Slavic цьркъвьнъ (cĭrkŭvĭnŭ). By surface analysis, церко́в (cerkóv) +‎ -ний (-nyj). Compare Russian церко́вный (cerkóvnyj), Belarusian царко́ўны (carkóŭny), Polish cerkiewny, Czech církevní, Old Church Slavonic црькъвьнъ (crĭkŭvĭnŭ).
