From Old Church Slavonic цѣломѫдрьѥ (cělomǫdrĭje), а Calque of Ancient Greek σωφροσύνη (sōphrosúnē). Formed as цял (cjal, whole) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ мъ́дър (mǎ́dǎr, wise) +‎ -ие (-ie).
