Inherited from Proto-Slavic *květьnь from Proto-Slavic *květъ. Related to цвето́к (cvetók, flower), referring to flowers which bloom at this time of year. Cognates include Polish kwiecień (April), Ukrainian кві́тень (kvítenʹ), Czech květen (May).
