Etymology

From Alanic *ɣæzæ, from Proto-Sarmatian *ɣaza, from Proto-Scythian *ɣazā f, *ɣazi m, from Proto-Iranian *gajah, cognate with Khotanese [script needed] (gaysä, reed), Persian گز (gaz, tamarisk). The Digor form is influenced by the Iron form, a *гъӕзӕ (ǧæzæ) would be expected.
