[edit]From Proto-Slavic *xvorstьje (“bushes”), originally meaning cluster of bushes. Morphologically, equivalent to храст (hrast, “thorn”) + -е (-e). Cognate with Russian хворо́стье pl (xvoróstʹje) (dialectal) and (except for the grammatical classification) formally equivalent to Old Church Slavonic хврастиѥ n (xvrastije) (Serbian rendition), Slovene hrástje n, Czech chrastí n, Slovak chrastie n.
