[edit]Borrowed from Russian хомяк (xomjak), probably influenced by an Iranian language (cf. Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬯𐬙𐬀𐬭 (hamaēstar, “pest, one who makes mess”)).
